The America I Believe In

Written by Shita Adhit

The America I believe in isn’t the America I want to see, but rather the America I’m already living in. The America I believe in is what this country strides for, or will become in time’s promise. America is unlike any other country in the world, for she offers many people a chance, everyone is treated equally, and maintains religious liberty. In the America I believe in, this is all improved or kept.

America provides a chance to build a good life. She’s a land of opportunity with an endless amount of possibilities and promised freedom. Basically, she gives the people a chance. But what kind of chance? Well, as Nick Adams puts it, a chance to fail. “Most people think America is all about success… I think America is all about failure. Most people in the world don’t get the chance to fail... To succeed, you must be given the chance to fail.” America allows for failure, and one must fail in order to succeed. The America I believe in gives this chance at success to all, no matter your race, national origin, or other status. Everyone is free to undertake any dream or pursue any career.

In the America I believe in, American citizens hold no discrimination against certain racial groups. Though harmony may not be entirely possible, I believe that America can come close. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and should treat each other equally. Despite the discriminations, slavery, and racial crimes that occurred in American history, I believe that all American citizens can soon live equally.   Anonymous writes, “We were all humans until race disconnected us, religion seperated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us”.

As stated before, am already partially living in the America I believe in, for in America, there is a huge diversity of people, unlike in other countries where one can sometimes never become a true citizen because of his or her background. As Dinesh D’Souza stated, “It (New York City) is a tumultuous place, teeming with diversity. New York has black and white, rich and poor, immigrant and native.” I’m proud that this part of the America I believe in is a reality.

In summary, the America I believe in offers a chance at success, is a land of equality, and of religious liberty. I’m positive that the America I believe in will soon morph into reality.
