We Were Once Young Spirits

Written by Roman Sage Tan

we were once young
spirits soaring free like the
canaries perched upon
the grand old sycamore tree
(splashing around the
mudbundant forest floor; a
rite of spring)

came rolling the hills
of summer as we bathed
in golden rays (full of
false jollity and
bravado, once thought i)

autumn creeped up on
us like a thief robbing us
of the fragments of
jouissance we had
left; in the falling leaves
and balding trees we saw
ourselves (a spiral down
into hellscape)

an icy serenade winter
belts out as
warmth comes to
a standstill and love
dies out (romance is
but an artefact of the
past)

Roman Sage Tan is a student living in Singapore. To him, writing is a cathartic experience that allows for the purgation of emotions and negativity. He enjoys writing poems in both English and his mother tongue, Chinese. In his free time, you can catch him binge-watching Grey's Anatomy and Glee, or reading Jane Austen's novels.
